Agafay Desert vs. Sahara Desert: Which Should You Visit?
Agafay vs Sahara comes down to time and what you want to see. Agafay is a rocky desert of bare hills and plateaus about 40 minutes from Marrakech, with the High Atlas on the horizon: you can ride a quad or a camel, watch the sunset, have dinner in a camp and sleep in your own hotel the same night. It has no big sand dunes. The Sahara dunes reachable from Marrakech, Erg Chebbi at Merzouga or Erg Chigaga beyond M'Hamid, are the golden sand seas people picture, but they sit roughly 500 to 560 km away, across the Tizi n'Tichka pass, and usually mean a 3-day round trip with two long driving days. If you have four days or fewer in Marrakech, or travel with young children, Agafay is the sensible choice. If tall dunes are the reason for your trip and you have three spare days, go to the Sahara.

The short answer: two very different deserts
Agafay and the Sahara are not two versions of the same thing. Agafay is a stone desert on the edge of Marrakech, a landscape of bare, rounded hills, gullies and plateaus with the High Atlas lined up behind it. The Sahara, in the part travellers reach from Marrakech, means the great sand seas of the south-east and the Draa valley: Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, the smaller dune areas around Zagora, and Erg Chigaga past M’Hamid.
We run activities in Agafay and we do not sell Sahara tours, so you might expect us to push Agafay no matter what. We would rather you pick the right desert. A traveller who wanted towering orange dunes and ends up on rocky hills will be disappointed, however good the sunset is. A traveller with three days in Marrakech who spends two of them in a minibus will be just as disappointed. The goal of this guide is to help you avoid both.
Here is how we would put it in one line each:
- Choose Agafay if your time in Marrakech is short, if you travel with children or older relatives, if you want a desert evening without changing hotel, or if the Atlas views appeal to you as much as sand.
- Choose the Sahara if tall sand dunes are the reason for your trip, if you have at least three free days, and if long road days do not bother you.
Agafay vs Sahara at a glance
The table below sums up the practical differences. Distances and drive times are approximate: they vary with the route, the stops and the traffic, and the mountain section can be slow.
| Agafay Desert | Sahara: Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | Sahara: Zagora / M’Hamid / Erg Chigaga | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakech | About 30 to 40 km | Roughly 560 km | About 350 km to Zagora, roughly 450 to 500 km to the Erg Chigaga area |
| Drive time (one way) | About 40 to 45 min | Usually 8 to 10 h of driving | About 6 h to Zagora, around 8 h to Erg Chigaga |
| Mountain pass | None | Tizi n’Tichka (High Atlas) | Tizi n’Tichka (High Atlas) |
| Landscape | Rocky hills, plateaus, dry riverbeds, Atlas views | Tall golden sand dunes rising from a stony plain | Smaller dunes near Zagora; large wild dunes at Erg Chigaga |
| Minimum sensible trip | A half day or an evening | 3 days / 2 nights | 2 days for Zagora, 3 days for Erg Chigaga |
| Typical activities | Quad, buggy, camel ride, horse riding, dinner show, pool day, camp night | Camel trek to a dune camp, sunrise on the dunes, 4x4 around the erg | Camel ride, dune camp, 4x4 desert track to Erg Chigaga |
| Best for | Short stays, families, first evening in the desert, Atlas lovers | Dune lovers with time, photographers chasing sand | Travellers wanting dunes with fewer people, or a shorter Sahara taste at Zagora |
| Budget level | Low to moderate: packs from 60 € per person, transfer included | Higher: several days of transport, driver and nights | Higher: several days of transport, driver and nights; 4x4 for Erg Chigaga |
We deliberately do not quote Sahara prices. We do not sell those tours, and prices vary a lot between shared group tours and private trips. What is safe to say: a multi-day trip costs more than an Agafay outing because you pay for days of driving, accommodation and meals along the way.
How far is each desert from Marrakech?
Distance is the single biggest difference between the two options, and it shapes everything else.
Agafay: about 40 minutes by road
The Agafay Desert starts roughly 30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, near the Lalla Takerkoust lake. Our pickups leave from your hotel or riad in Marrakech, and the drive takes about 40 to 45 minutes. That is short enough to do a morning activity and be back for lunch in the medina, or to leave at 4 pm and return around 11 pm after dinner. You keep your room, your luggage stays where it is and nobody needs to pack an overnight bag.
Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: roughly 560 km
Merzouga, at the foot of Erg Chebbi, is the classic Sahara destination from Marrakech. The road runs about 560 km, first over the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, then past Ouarzazate and along the Dades and Todra valleys towards the dunes. Expect roughly 8 to 10 hours of driving, more with photo stops. This is why almost every Merzouga trip from Marrakech lasts three days: one day to get most of the way, a second to reach the dunes and ride out to the camp, a third for the long drive back. Two-day Merzouga trips exist, but they mean very long days in the vehicle and little time on the sand.
Zagora, M’Hamid and Erg Chigaga
The Draa valley route is shorter. Zagora is about 350 km from Marrakech, around 6 hours of driving, which makes a 2-day trip possible. The dunes close to Zagora are small and scattered, so do not expect Erg Chebbi there. For big dunes on this side, you carry on about 95 km to M’Hamid, where the asphalt ends, then follow a desert track of around 60 km to Erg Chigaga. That last stretch needs a 4x4 and a driver who knows it. Erg Chigaga is wilder and quieter than Merzouga, but it is also further from any road, and most trips there take three days.
The Tizi n’Tichka pass
Every Sahara itinerary from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas, usually by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, which climbs to more than 2,200 m. The road is paved and the scenery is superb: red villages, terraced valleys, sharp bends. It is also slow, and travellers prone to car sickness feel it. In winter, snow can close the pass for a while, so a December or January Sahara trip needs a little flexibility. Agafay sits on the Marrakech side of the mountains, so none of this applies.
What does each desert look like?
This is where honest expectations matter most.
Agafay: a stone desert facing the Atlas
Agafay is a rocky desert. Picture bare, rounded hills in beige, ochre and pink tones, dry riverbeds that turn into quad tracks, and wide plateaus with almost no vegetation. On clear days, especially from late autumn to spring, the snow-capped High Atlas fills the southern horizon. The light changes fast at the end of the day, and sunset is when Agafay is at its best.
What Agafay does not have is sand dunes. You will find sandy patches here and there, but if someone tells you Agafay looks like the Sahara, they are overselling it. Many visitors actually prefer it for what it is: a lunar landscape with mountains behind, quiet at night, half an hour from the city.

The Sahara: sand seas at the edge of the country
Erg Chebbi is the image on the postcards: a long ridge of orange and golden dunes, with the tallest reaching around 150 m above the surrounding plain. Erg Chigaga is more spread out, its dunes are generally lower on average, and it feels more isolated. Around both, the land is mostly flat stony desert, so the dunes rise suddenly out of it. Sunrise and sunset on the sand, and a night sky far from any city, are the main reasons people make the journey.
Which landscape photographs better?
Both, in different ways. The Sahara gives you the clean curves, ripples and long shadows of dunes. Agafay gives you layers: rocky hills in front, the Atlas behind, and camels or quads crossing the frame. The golden hour is short in both places, so the timing of your activity matters more than the desert you choose.
What can you do in each desert?
The activity list overlaps more than people expect. The difference is how much time you get for them, and what surrounds them.
Activities in Agafay
In Agafay, everything is organised as half-day or evening outings from Marrakech, with return transfer from your hotel included. Departures are usually at 9 am, when it is cooler, or 4 pm, to finish at sunset.
- Quad biking: automatic quads, no licence needed, 16 years old to ride alone. A 1-hour ride costs 40 €, about 2 h 15 hotel to hotel. See our quad biking page.
- Buggy: 2-seat buggies driven by you (a driving licence is required), 150 € per buggy for 2 hours, with pickup around 3:30 pm and a sunset descent. Details on the buggy ride page.
- Camel ride: 1 hour with a Berber guide for 35 €, from age 5 with an adult. The 4 pm departure ends at sunset. More on the sunset camel ride.
- Horse riding: 1 hour in the saddle for 100 €, pace adapted to the group, beginners welcome. See horse riding in Agafay.
- Dinner show: Moroccan dinner in a tent, live music and a fire show, always booked with a sunset activity. Back at your hotel around 11 pm. Read about the dinner under the stars.
- Pool day: a full day from 9 am to 7 pm with an infinity pool, lunch, a 1-hour quad ride and a sunset camel ride, for 120 €.

Activities in the Sahara
A Sahara trip is less about a list of activities and more about the journey and the night. Typical programmes include a camel ride to a camp in the dunes, dinner and a night in a tent, sunrise from the top of a dune, and sometimes a 4x4 loop around the erg or sandboarding. The road itself is a big part of the experience: kasbahs and ksour, palm groves, gorges and the Atlas crossing. If you love road trips and changing scenery, that is a plus. If you came for a desert evening, it is a lot of driving for one night on the sand.
Where you sleep
In Agafay, you can sleep in your Marrakech hotel and simply come out for the afternoon and evening, or stay overnight in a camp. Our 2-day tour includes a night in a luxury camp in a tent with its own bathroom. In the Sahara, you sleep in a dune camp, the comfort of which ranges from simple to very comfortable depending on the tour, plus usually one night in a hotel or guesthouse on the way.

How long do you need for each?
This is the question that settles most decisions.
Agafay: half a day to two days
- Half a day: a quad ride, a camel ride or a horse ride, morning or late afternoon, about 2 to 4 hours from hotel to hotel. The Quad + Camel pack (60 €) takes about 4 hours in total.
- An evening: pickup around 4 pm, a sunset activity, dinner and show, back around 11 pm. This is the most popular format.
- A full day: the pool day, 9 am to 7 pm.
- Two days: our Imlil & Agafay tour (385 €), with a High Atlas valley on day one and the desert in the evening.
Sahara: three days is the honest minimum for big dunes
For Merzouga, plan three days and two nights. For Erg Chigaga, three days is also the norm. Zagora works in two days, but the dunes there are modest. A real one-day Sahara trip from Marrakech is not possible: if you see “desert day trips” advertised, check the programme, because they go to a closer area such as Agafay, not to the Sahara dunes.
Which desert fits your trip? A guide by traveller profile
Use the table to find your situation, then read the detail below.
| Your situation | Our honest recommendation |
|---|---|
| 2 to 4 days in Marrakech | Agafay, as an evening or half day |
| 5 to 7 days in Morocco, Marrakech base | Agafay evening, plus the Sahara if dunes really matter to you |
| Travelling with young children | Agafay, especially camel + dinner |
| Couple wanting a special night | Agafay dinner show, or the 2-day Imlil & Agafay tour |
| First time in Morocco | Agafay first; the Sahara if you have a week or more |
| Photographer | Sahara for dunes; Agafay for Atlas views and camel silhouettes |
| Want dunes but have only 2 days | Zagora, knowing the dunes are small, or Agafay with Imlil |
Short stay in Marrakech (2 to 4 days)
Agafay, without hesitation. A Sahara trip would take most or all of your stay, and you would spend more time on the road than in the desert or the city. In Agafay, an evening is enough: the Quad + Camel + Dinner show pack at 75 € gives you the quad, the camel at sunset and the dinner in one outing, and you still have your mornings for the souks, gardens and palaces.
Families with children
Agafay is much easier on children. The drive is short, the activities are short, and nobody spends 9 hours strapped into a minibus. Children can ride a camel from age 5 with an adult, and younger ones can ride as passengers on a quad behind an adult. The Camel + Dinner show pack (60 €) is the one families choose most. The evening ends around 11 pm, so for very young children a morning camel ride may suit better. For a relaxed day, the pool day keeps everyone happy between activities.
Couples
Both deserts work for couples, for different reasons. The Sahara offers isolation and a night in the dunes. Agafay offers a sunset ride side by side, by buggy, horse or camel, then a candle-lit dinner in a tent, with no long transfer the next day. If you want a night away rather than just an evening, the 2-day Imlil & Agafay tour adds a mountain valley and a night in a luxury tent.
First time in Morocco
On a first trip, Marrakech, the Atlas and Agafay already fill a week easily. Unless you have at least a week and dunes are high on your list, start with Agafay and keep the Sahara for a second trip, when you can give it the time it deserves. Our travel tips for Agafay cover what to pack and what to expect on the day.
Photographers
If the shot you have in mind is ripples of sand and long dune shadows, only the Sahara will deliver it, and you should give it three days to have both a sunset and a sunrise on the dunes. If you like layered landscapes, Agafay is very photogenic: the rocky foreground, the Atlas behind and a camel caravan in the late light. The 4 pm departures are timed for that light.
The middle option: Imlil & Agafay in 2 days
Some travellers want more than an evening but cannot spare three days. That is what our 2-day tour is for. It costs 385 € per person and runs over two days and one night:
- Day one: departure from Marrakech at 9 am to the Imlil valley in the High Atlas, with visits to argan and carpet cooperatives, then down to Agafay for a camel ride at sunset, dinner and a night in a luxury camp, in a tent with its own bathroom.
- Day two: a quad ride in the desert, then back in Marrakech around noon.
You get mountains and desert, a night under canvas and a sunset on camelback, without crossing the Tizi n’Tichka twice. It will not replace the dunes of Erg Chebbi, and we will not pretend it does. It is simply the best use of two days if you are based in Marrakech. You can book the Imlil & Agafay tour directly.
Our packs for a short desert experience

A 20 % deposit confirms the booking, the balance is paid on the day, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. If the weather turns, we move your outing to another day at no cost. A private transfer is available for 80 € per vehicle of 1 to 7 seats. The full details are in our terms and conditions, and our complete guide to Agafay Desert tours from Marrakech explains how a typical outing runs.
Can you do both?
Yes, if your trip is long enough. A common pattern for a week or more in Morocco is a few days in Marrakech with an Agafay evening, then a 3-day trip to Merzouga or Erg Chigaga, or a longer route that crosses the country towards Fes. The two do not compete: Agafay is a desert evening near the city, the Sahara is a journey. If you only have room for one, go back to the table above and be honest about how many days you can give it.
When you are ready, choose your pack and date here. Book 24 to 48 hours ahead if you can, especially for evenings, as seats are limited each night.

FAQ
Does the Agafay Desert have sand dunes?
No, not real ones. Agafay is a stone desert: rolling hills, dry riverbeds and flat plateaus of beige and ochre earth, with the High Atlas in the background. You will see a few sandy patches, but nothing like the tall dunes of Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga. If walking up a big sand dune is a must for you, plan a multi-day Sahara trip instead.
How far is the Sahara from Marrakech?
It depends which dunes you mean. Merzouga and Erg Chebbi are roughly 560 km away, usually 8 to 10 hours of driving through the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Zagora is around 350 km, about 6 hours, and Erg Chigaga adds a paved road to M'Hamid then a desert track. Agafay, by comparison, is about 40 to 45 minutes by road.
Can I visit the Sahara on a day trip from Marrakech?
Not realistically. Even the closest Sahara area, around Zagora, is about 6 hours each way, and the big dunes of Merzouga need around 8 to 10 hours each way. Most travellers allow 3 days for Merzouga and 2 to 3 days for Zagora or Erg Chigaga. For a desert experience inside one day, Agafay is the practical answer.
Is Agafay worth it if I am also going to the Sahara?
It can be, because the two feel different. Agafay is about Atlas views, sunset activities and an evening in a camp close to the city, while the Sahara is about dunes and remoteness. Many travellers do a quad ride or a horse ride in Agafay on a free afternoon, then head to the dunes later in the trip.
What is the best Agafay option if I have little time?
The Quad + Camel + Dinner show pack at 75 € per person covers the essentials in one evening: pickup in Marrakech around 4 pm, a quad ride, a camel ride at sunset, dinner in the tent with live music and a fire show, and back at your hotel around 11 pm. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before.
