Top 10 Things to Do in Agafay Desert

The best things to do in Agafay desert are a quad bike ride across the stony hills, a camel ride timed for sunset, and a Moroccan dinner in a tent with live Gnawa music and a fire show. Add a buggy you drive yourself, a horse ride facing the Atlas Mountains, a full pool day at a desert camp, mint tea as the light turns gold and a sky full of stars once dinner is over. Agafay sits about 40 to 45 minutes by road from Marrakech, so all of this fits into a half day or an evening, with hotel pickup included. Single activities start at €35 for a one-hour camel ride. The best value is a pack: Quad + Camel + Dinner show costs €75 per person and covers four of the ten experiences on this list in one evening, from 4 pm to about 11 pm.

Camel caravan crossing the Agafay desert at sunset

Agafay is a stone desert on the edge of Marrakech: ochre hills, dry riverbeds and flat plateaus, with the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon for much of the year. There are no sand dunes here, and that is the point. The terrain is perfect for engines, hooves and long views, and it is close enough to the city that you can leave your riad after lunch and be back before midnight.

Below are the ten experiences we think are worth your time, ranked by how often they make a trip. For each one you will find what it actually involves, the best time of day, who it suits, a few practical tips from our guides, and the product that covers it. At the end, a summary table puts durations and prices side by side.

1. Quad biking across the stony hills

A quad ride is the activity that brings most visitors to Agafay. You ride an automatic quad bike in convoy behind a guide for one hour, across dry riverbeds, rocky tracks and open plateaus, with the Atlas behind you. No licence is required. A safety briefing of about 15 minutes covers the controls, and helmet and goggles are provided.

Best time: two departures a day. The 9 am slot is cooler and quieter. The 4 pm slot finishes in the warm evening light, which is the one we recommend from October to April.

Who it suits: first-timers as much as people who have ridden before, since the guide sets a pace for the group. You must be 16 to drive alone; younger children ride as passengers behind an adult.

Practical tips: wear closed shoes and long trousers, not shorts and sandals. Bring a scarf or buff for the dust, especially if you are not first in the line. Sunglasses fit under the goggles, but leave expensive cameras in your bag while moving.

Our product: the 1-hour quad ride costs €40 with tea, water and return transfer from your Marrakech hotel, about 2 h 15 door to door. Most of our guests prefer to pair it: Quad + Camel at €60 or Quad + Dinner show at €60.

2. A camel ride timed for sunset

A camel ride in Agafay is a slow, one-hour walk through the hills with a Berber guide leading the caravan by the rope. It is the calmest way to take in the landscape, and the one people photograph most. The guide gives a short safety briefing before you mount, then talks about local life as you go, and there is a tea break on the way.

Best time: the 4 pm departure, so the ride ends as the sun drops behind the hills. It is our most requested slot. In summer, the afternoon is also the only comfortable option, as midday heat on the plateau can be hard going.

Who it suits: almost everyone. Children can ride from age 5 with an adult, which makes it the default family activity.

Practical tips: lean back slightly when the camel stands up and kneels down, since it rises back legs first. Long trousers are more comfortable than shorts on the saddle. Keep your phone on a strap if you want photos from the top.

Our product: the sunset camel ride costs €35 per person with return transfer. If you plan to stay for the evening, take it as Camel + Dinner show at €60, which adds the meal and the show for €25 more.

3. Dinner in a tent with live music and a fire show

The Agafay dinner show is an evening at a desert camp: a Moroccan dinner served in a candle-lit nomad tent, musicians playing live, then a fire show outside under the night sky. Gnawa music, with its iron castanets and deep three-stringed bass lute, has roots that go back to sub-Saharan Africa and is very much part of Marrakech’s identity. Hearing it in the desert is something else.

Best time: evening only. Pickup is around 4 pm, you do a sunset activity first, settle in the camp around 7 pm, and leave around 9:30 to 10 pm to reach your hotel about 11 pm.

Who it suits: couples, groups of friends, families. With young children, choose the camel option, since the quad is for 16 and over and the night ends late.

Practical tips: bring a warm layer, even in spring. Desert nights cool quickly once the sun is down, and in winter they can get properly cold. Tell us about dietary needs when you book.

Our product: the dinner is always sold with an activity. Choose Camel + Dinner show or Quad + Dinner show at €60, or the full Quad + Camel + Dinner show at €75. Read more on the dinner under the stars page. Seats are limited each evening, so book 24 to 48 hours ahead.

4. Driving a buggy to the highest ridge

A buggy ride puts you behind the wheel of a two-seat off-road vehicle, side by side with your passenger. It is more physical and more technical than the quad, and the route is longer: a 15 to 20 km loop that climbs to the highest ridge in the area, behind a guide on a motorbike, with a panoramic photo stop at the top.

Best time: the buggy runs as a sunset outing. Pickup is around 3:30 pm, with welcome tea and a briefing at the camp, then the drive, a descent at sunset and a last tea. You are back at your hotel around 6:45 to 7 pm.

Who it suits: pairs and anyone who likes to drive. The driver must show a valid car driving licence. Without one, the quad is the better choice.

Practical tips: comfortable clothes, closed shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen. Agree with your passenger who drives which half of the loop, so both of you get time at the wheel.

Our product: the 2-hour buggy ride costs €150 per buggy, or €75 each for two, transfer included. The 3-hour version, at €189 per buggy, goes further into Agafay.

5. A pool day at a desert camp

A pool day trades activity for rest: a full day at a desert camp with an infinity pool, sunbeds, towels and cold drinks, looking out over the stony hills. It is the most relaxed way to see Agafay, and it still leaves room for some action.

Best time: it is a full day, from about 9 am to 7 pm. It makes most sense in the warm months, from late spring to early autumn, when a pool feels like a real escape from the city heat.

Who it suits: couples, friends and small groups who want a day off from the medina, and anyone travelling with mixed energy levels. The group is capped at 12.

Practical tips: bring swimwear, a hat and high-factor sunscreen. The plateau offers little shade outside the camp, and the sun is strong even when the air feels mild.

Our product: the VIP Pool Day costs €120 per person and includes the pool, a Moroccan lunch, a 1-hour guided quad ride, a sunset camel ride and an air-conditioned return transfer. It is the only way to tick off the pool, the quad, the camel and the sunset in a single day.

6. Horse riding facing the Atlas Mountains

Horse riding in Agafay means one hour in the saddle on the desert tracks, with a guide who adapts the pace to the group. Walk, trot and sometimes a little canter, depending on the riders and the ground. The guide stops at the best viewpoints along the way.

Best time: 9 am or 4 pm, like the quad and camel. Morning riders often get the clearest view of the mountains, while the afternoon ride ends in golden light.

Who it suits: beginners and experienced riders. It is the quietest of the “active” options and the best for people who want to feel the landscape rather than speed across it.

Practical tips: long trousers and closed shoes with a small heel if you have them. A helmet is provided and recommended for all levels. Tell us your level when booking so we can match the horse.

Our product: horse riding in Agafay costs €100 per person, with tea and return transfer from Marrakech. Allow 2 h 30 to 3 h in total.

7. Mint tea while the light turns gold

Tea in the desert is not a separate activity, but it is one of the moments guests talk about afterwards. Sweet mint tea, poured from height into small glasses, is how hospitality works across Morocco, and in Agafay it usually comes at the end of a ride, when the hills turn orange and the air starts to cool.

Best time: late afternoon, after a 4 pm departure.

Who it suits: everyone, including the person in your group who does not want to ride anything.

Practical tips: if you take sugar seriously, say so; if you do not, ask for a lighter glass. Refusing a second glass is fine, but accepting one is part of the ritual.

Our product: tea is included with every outing. The camel ride has a tea break, the quad comes with Berber tea, the buggy starts and ends with tea, and the Quad + Camel pack adds mint tea and pancakes in the tent. The cheapest way in is the €35 camel ride.

8. Stargazing away from the city lights

Agafay is far enough from Marrakech for the night sky to look very different from what you see in the medina. Once dinner is over and the fire show ends, step away from the tents and let your eyes adjust for a few minutes: on a clear night, the stars come out in numbers you rarely see in a city.

Best time: after dinner, on our evening packs. The darkest skies come around the new moon; a full moon lights up the hills beautifully but hides fainter stars.

Who it suits: couples, curious kids who are still awake, and photographers with a tripod.

Practical tips: we do not run a separate astronomy tour, so think of this as a moment within the evening rather than a guided session. Bring a warm layer, turn off your phone torch, and give your eyes time to adapt.

Our product: any evening pack, from €60: Quad + Camel + Dinner show, Quad + Dinner show or Camel + Dinner show. If you stay overnight on the 2-day tour, you get the whole night under that sky.

9. Atlas views and desert photography

The view from Agafay to the High Atlas is the reason many photographers come here. On clear days, especially in winter and spring, the snow on the peaks stands out above the brown hills, and the low sun at either end of the day gives the stone its colour.

Best time: the morning for sharp air and clear mountain outlines; the hour before sunset for warm light and long shadows.

Who it suits: photographers and anyone who wants pictures beyond selfies on a quad.

Practical tips: the camel ride is the best moving platform, slow enough to shoot from. The buggy loop includes a panoramic stop at the highest ridge, and the horse ride stops at viewpoints. Haze can soften the mountains in summer, so do not count on the snow-capped view in July and August.

Our product: photography is a moment within our rides, not a separate tour. For the best mix of views and light, take the 4 pm camel ride from €35, the buggy ridge loop, or the horse ride.

10. Imlil and Agafay in two days, with a night in a luxury camp

This is the one experience on the list that takes you beyond Agafay. Day one heads into the High Atlas to the Imlil valley, at the foot of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at about 4,167 m. On the way you stop at argan and carpet cooperatives, which is the most direct look at Berber craft traditions on any of our tours. In the afternoon you drive down to Agafay for a sunset camel ride, dinner and a night in a luxury camp, in a tent with its own bathroom. Day two starts with a quad ride, and you are back in Marrakech around noon.

Best time: departure is at 9 am from Marrakech.

Who it suits: travellers who have one night to spare and want both mountains and desert without the long drive to the Sahara. If you are weighing those two options, read Agafay or the Sahara.

Practical tips: pack layers. Imlil sits at roughly 1,700 to 1,800 m and feels noticeably cooler than Marrakech, and the night in the desert can be cold outside summer.

Our product: Imlil & Agafay in 2 days costs €385 per person.

Bonus: New Year’s Eve in the desert

If you are in Marrakech on 31 December, our New Year’s Eve evening swaps the city crowds for a desert camp: one activity of your choice (camel or quad), a festive Moroccan dinner, live music all evening and a countdown at midnight, with return transport from Marrakech. It costs €220 per person. It is a single departure with fixed capacity, the time is confirmed when you book, and the cancellation terms are given at booking too. Places go early.

Combine, don’t choose: how to build your Agafay day

Most of these experiences happen in the same place on the same afternoon, so booking them one by one costs you more and adds transfers. Packs solve that. Here is how we usually advise guests:

  • One evening, everything: Quad + Camel + Dinner show at €75. Quad, sunset camel ride, tea, dinner, music, fire show and the stars. Four or five items from this list in about seven hours.
  • Family evening: Camel + Dinner show at €60, open from age 5 for the camel.
  • Half day, no dinner: Quad + Camel at €60, about 4 hours, morning or afternoon.
  • Adrenaline and dinner: Quad + Dinner show at €60.
  • A full day of rest with some action: VIP Pool Day at €120.
  • Mountains and desert: Imlil & Agafay in 2 days at €385.

Compare that with single activities: a quad at €40 plus a camel ride at €35 already comes to €75, before any dinner. The full pack gives you the evening on top for the same money.

Practical points before you book

Getting there. Return transport from your hotel or riad in Marrakech city is included on every product. The drive takes about 40 to 45 minutes. Pickups outside the city carry a supplement depending on distance. If you prefer not to share, a private transfer costs €80 per vehicle for 1 to 7 people (not available on the 2-day tour, which has its own transport).

Weather. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for daytime riding. Summer afternoons are hot, which is why the late slot and the pool day are popular then. Winter days are often mild and clear, but nights can drop close to freezing, so a warm jacket is a must for the evening.

Booking and cancellation. A 20% deposit confirms your booking, by card or PayPal, and the balance is paid on the day. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, and if the weather turns bad we move you to another day at no cost. The full details are in our terms and conditions.

Ages and safety. Quad: 16 to drive alone, younger children as passengers. Buggy: valid car driving licence for the driver. Camel: from age 5 with an adult. Closed shoes are required for quad and buggy, and every departure starts with a safety briefing.

FAQ

What is the best thing to do in Agafay desert?

For a first visit, the sunset evening is the one most people remember: a camel or quad ride as the sun drops behind the hills, then dinner in a tent with live music and a fire show. Our Quad + Camel + Dinner show pack combines all of it for €75 per person, with pickup around 4 pm and return to your Marrakech hotel around 11 pm.

How much time do I need in Agafay?

A half day is enough for one or two activities: a quad and camel combination takes about 4 hours hotel to hotel. An evening with dinner runs about 7 hours, from 4 pm to 11 pm. The VIP Pool Day fills a whole day, 9 am to 7 pm, and the Imlil and Agafay tour takes 2 days with one night in a luxury camp.

Can children do activities in Agafay?

Yes. The camel ride is open from age 5 with an adult, which makes the Camel + Dinner show pack the usual family choice. Children under 16 cannot drive a quad alone but can ride as passengers behind an adult. Buggy drivers need a valid car driving licence. Message us on WhatsApp if you are travelling with very young children.

Is it better to go to Agafay in the morning or the afternoon?

Both work. The 9 am departure is cooler and suits summer days and photographers who like clear light. The 4 pm departure ends with the sunset, which is why it is the most requested slot for quad and camel rides. Evening packs and the buggy ride are built around the sunset, so they only run in the afternoon.

Do I need to book Agafay activities in advance?

For evenings and packs, book 24 to 48 hours ahead if you can, because seats at the dinner are limited each night. A 20% deposit confirms the booking and the balance is paid on the day. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, and bad weather means free rescheduling.
